Hello, and thank you for taking the time to visit my blog. But before we begin our journey, I would like to make the following disclaimer. I am not that eternally cheerful mom with perfectly well-mannered kids. They, Holden and Meredith, are a pair of beautiful misfits that fill my life with joy and chaos. And I wouldn’t have it any other way. I am obsessed with fashion and serial shows. Netflix and Amazon will be the end of me. My house is at most times clean, but most definitely always cluttered. Probably because I spend an inordinate amount of time looking at fashion magazines and mindless programming. It really can be quite debilitating. But, hey, I do know where everything is. And isn’t that really what counts?
Most of my time is spent running the household and volunteering at school. School is a never ending volunteer opportunity. But in my spare time, I love taking on new projects that inspire me. I am super creative and crafty. But most of my projects remain unfinished and stashed in the guestroom, where it stays, until a guest visits. Too many passion projects, so little time. So if the mommy blogger you were hoping to follow is that capable and admirably productive person I profess not to be, you are at the wrong blog.
Now that I’ve got that out of the way, my name is Melissa Kelly. I do not have a picture perfect life, but it is perfectly suited to me. We moved up to the Seattle area from Orange County, CA in 2009, when Microsoft came calling. After living in a temperate region for many years, I am excited to be back in a climate with changing seasonal weather. I love the lush green foliage in the forests and the constant rain. No water shortages on this end. We live in a culturally diverse neighborhood, which provides an endless supply of meaningful experiences for me and my kids. I have met amazing people and have surrounded myself with a great group of friends. Seattle is only about a 25 minute drive away and skiing about an hour and a half. There is absolutely no end to the outdoor activities available.
Currently, I am an Independent Stylist for Stella & Dot. What better way to feed my fashion addiction than to work for an accessory retailer. After all, accessories can make or break an outfit. Please check out my favorite pieces in my sidebar or at my actual Stella & Dot Site. My personal style is influenced and inspired by many things. I find fashion inspiration in people, music, art, culture and an occasional flight of mad whimsy. I was born in the Philippines and my mother was a beauty queen before she got married. I remember combing through her many scrapbooks and admiring all the elaborate gowns she used to wear. I especially loved the Filipina ternos with their exaggerated butterfly sleeves. Women wore these on special occasions. They came in such a variety of beautiful fabrics and embroidery and beading. I believe my obsession with fashion began here.
My personal style is an ever evolving entity. Playing with shapes, colors and textures was a way to express myself. The hardest part of my fashion journey was accepting my body’s limitations. I’m short with very broad shoulders. Not the ideal body type. No matter how much I tried, I could not make every fashion inspiration work. And it drove me crazy. But eventually after lengthy trial and error, I figured out what did.
So this blog is about my interests. Figuring out what works and what doesn’t. In life and in fashion. Talking about the trials and tribulations of raising teens, making a life in the Pacific Northwest, investigating the current trends and cultures. Where to shop and why. But mostly it’s about a love of life and of fashion. Oh, and of what’s going on on GoT.
